Justin Opens Up About Britney, Lance, JC And The Media

Although an 'NSYNC reunion is looking less and less likely, the group's two most prominent members are collaborating.Justin Timberlake, whose second solo album FutureSex/LoveSounds is due September 12 .is among the producers contributing to JC Chasez's sophomore effort."He and I have written three or four songs now that I kind of put a producer hat on for, which was an honor, because in my opinion, he had the best voice out of all of us," Timberlake revealed recently. "Out of all the boy bands, call 'em what you will, he was the one that could out-sing all of us. ... And I've known him since I was 10, so it was fun to sit behind the board and push him."Chasez has described the yet-untitled follow-up to Schizophrenic, due in early 2007, as more focused (see "JC Chasez Promises Next Solo Outing Will Be Less Schizophrenic"), and Timberlake is proud to take some credit for that direction."I remember our conversations about it, I said, 'You're too talented for your own brain,' " Timberlake recalled. "I think that when you have that much talent and you can sing so many different styles, you want to sing all of them. And so what we did in the studio is, I really feel like we zoned in on a specific thing for him and it really came out. Not only do I really think they're good songs, good pop records, but they build a character for him."While Schizophrenic merged genres from R&B to electronica to rock, the new album is solely "pop-alternative," as Chasez has dubbed it."You can have all the talent in the world, but if you don't give it a specific style, you give people too much room to compare you to everyone else," Timberlake said. "And I definitely saw that with the first record."
Along with candidly discussing Chasez's music, Timberlake also opened up about fellow 'NSYNC star Lance Bass, who recently announced he is gay (see " 'NSYNC's Lance Bass Reveals He's Gay: 'I'm Not Ashamed ... I Don't Think It's Wrong' "). Timberlake said he breathed a sigh of relief for his friend."I think Lance is one of the greatest people I know, and I'm just happy that he had self-acceptance over this because I'm sure it's hard," Timberlake said. "The guy grew up in the Bible Belt, you know, so just as his friend, you want that for him. You want him to be OK and live his life. I think that a lot of the boy bands, and they date back, you know, a little ways, I think that they all sign up for a certain thing and — this might be me assuming too much — but I think that a lot of them buy into that illusion as well. Especially when you have to live it and it's not who you really are. So I'm happy for him."Timberlake also addressed the recent interview he did with the U.K.'s Observer Music Monthly magazine, in which he said he's taken drugs and that "nicotine is more addictive than heroin.""I'll just say this, and I'm not attacking anyone, but the interesting thing about a lot of magazine interviews that you do is that you get asked questions, and you get asked them a specific way, and you have a specific way [of answering], like we're having a conversation, and you make a statement like, 'It's a proven fact that nicotine is more addictive than heroin,' " he explained. "And then you keep going through the conversation and then they ask you another question and you say, 'Look, I'm not hear to preach to anybody, I just say don't do anything in excess, don't get carried away with anything.' The next thing I see is like, 'Heroin is safer than cigarettes.' And I'm like, 'Who in their right mind would think that?' "The thing you have to realize and not get bent out of shape about is the press is gonna say what the press wants to say," he continued. "And they're gonna make a big deal out of the things they want to make a big deal out of. I know what I said. I know how I said it. If the conversation was printed there would be no room for misquote or error. But you can't worry about it. At the end of the day, who cares? The only thing I care about is that I can get my music out."Timberlake cares enough that he does not discuss current or past relationships with the media, although he has publicly wished the best for Britney Spears."I get approached a lot in print interviews about her," Justin said of Britney. "It's such a part of my life that was so long ago to me that I prefer not to talk about it anymore because it's giving it too much weight. And again, it's like the comment I made in the U.K. press, it's always misconstrued. But the truth of the matter is, I really do wish her well and I do want to see her win."For more on Timberlake, including his explanation for not re-forming 'NSYNC, check out "Justin's Future Shock." Jay-Z Teams With U.N., MTV To Bring Attention To World's Water Crisis

MC's learning process documented in 'Diary of Jay-Z: Water for Life,' airing November 24.

NEW YORK — When Jay-Z talks, his words reverberate all around the world. On Wednesday morning (August 9), he held a press conference at the United Nations building with U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan, MTV President Christina Norman and others to announce a partnership aimed at bringing attention and relief to the many parts of the world where lack of safe drinking water is destroying communities and lives. On his international tour, which begins next month, Jay will travel to several areas affected by the water crisis. His experiences will be documented by MTV for a special, "Diary of Jay-Z: Water for Life," airing November 24. The special will follow Jay's learning process as he meets people who are among the 1 billion worldwide without access to safe drinking water. It will also follow Jay as he visits places where sustainable, environmentally friendly solutions are under way to bring fresh water to devastated communities. "It's a huge responsibility, and humbling at the same time," Jay said, after the conference, about the role he's taking on. "I wanted to go to these [countries I've never visited before] to just tour and play music. Of course, I can't go to any place without touching the culture and seeing what's going on. When you start getting down to Africa and places like that, you see that billions of people don't have access to water."(Click here to watch the press conference on UN.org.)The special will also encourage young people to take any of the 12 steps associated with "Break the Addiction," MTV's yearlong campaign to engage young people to help reduce global warming, which has exacerbated the world's water crisis. Beginning in September, Think.mtv.com will feature a special section dedicated to the project. "It's a basic thing to us," Jay said. "If you bring awareness to other young people, they're gonna see [that] and want to be involved. I'm not a politician — I'm just a regular person with a heart. If you see a problem like that and do nothing about it, there's something wrong with you."Jay said that when he heard the statistics, he wanted to get involved right away. "I'm very excited to go and not only be a rock star in these countries, but to help," he said while seated next to Annan. "I'm excited. Thanks to the U.N. and MTV."Annan began the conference by citing statistics showing that more than 4,500 children die each day from preventable diseases caused by unsafe water and poor sanitation. Jay said he has donated money to help build "play pumps," a merry-go-round-like structure that pumps clean, safe drinking water from a deep borehole every time children spin it. He added that he's mailed letters to his friends in the entertainment industry encouraging them to get involved as well. He said he hopes 1,000 pumps can be built. Although the itinerary of Jay's tour has not yet been announced, it will begin on September 9 in Poland, and MTV's cameras will catch up to him shortly after in Turkey. Initially, Hov said he wanted to go to places he never touched before but where he has a fanbase."I wanted to get out and play places I haven't seen. See people who have a connection, people who have been listening to my music for 10 years and never got to see me," he explained after the conference. Although he acknowledged that it might be difficult to shake off the sadness of seeing so much human tragedy during the day and become a fun-loving showman at night, he said the shows will not be melancholy. "Music is escapism," he said. "Also, I'll take joy in the fact for that two hours or however long I'm playing, everyone can enjoy themselves and forget about the issue we're talking about."

Outkast Deny Breakup Rumors: 'Everything Is Still Tight,' Andre 3000 Says

'We're holding it under wraps. ... But we're still doing music,' Dre reveals.

It's been years since we've seen them in the same video and there are no plans for them to perform together in the near or distant future, yet the members of Outkast maintain that they have not broken up. Andre 3000 phoned in to MTV News on Tuesday night to clear up the rumors."Yesterday I got a phone call from Big Boi and he said that on some hip-hop Web sites that the headlines were reading something to the effect of, 'It's Official: Outkast Is Broken Up,' or something like that," Andre said. "And man, we're looking at it like, where is this sh-- coming from? I was on 'TRL' today to release a new video, and I meant to say something [about the situation] on the air. But the way they had the questions set up, I didn't have a chance to do it."Andre says that the rumors are not just on the Internet, but very much in the streets."N---as hit me in the street like, 'Yeah man, I heard the bad news. Sorry to hear about that,' " Andre continued. "I'm like 'Man, what are you talking about?' Everything is still tight, most definitely."Fueling the rumors of the 'Kast's separation have been the fact that both Dre and Big are appearing in separate videos for two solo songs — "Idlewild Blue (Don'tchu Worry 'Bout Me)" and "Morris Brown," respectively — to promote their upcoming film and video instead of releasing visuals for the cut "Mighty O," which features both of their raps . Dre blames that on not being able to find the right way to present "Mighty O" in a timely fashion."Really, we were supposed to shoot the 'Mighty O' video, but we were shuffling around with too many treatments and it got too late," 3000 explained. "The record company and film company felt that it was probably better off to help sell the movie to go with these songs ["Idlewild Blue" and "Morris Brown."]. But originally we were supposed to come out with just one single."In addition to the hailstorm of Internet rumors, there was a May feature story in Entertainment Weekly that painted the twosome going in separate directions musically and personally. More recently, some radio shows and news outlets started to report that Outkast had turned down an invitation to be on "The Oprah Winfrey Show" because the group could not match up schedules."Really man, this album, it's been a whole bunch of crazy rumors. [One said] we turned Oprah down and all this type of stuff which was totally not true," Dre added, audibly registering his disappointment in the falsehoods that have been spread."We went to Oprah because we were pumping this 'Idlewild' film and soundtrack. They sent her a copy of the movie. But the [film's] release dates kept being pushed back and Oprah's show is dormant during the summertime, so there was no chance for us to do it. Next thing we see on the Internet is, 'Outkast turns down Oprah.' They make it seem like we're jumping on the bandwagon with 50 Cent and Ludacris and some people boycotting, which is totally not the case' " (see "Oprah Says She Doesn't Have Beef With Hip-Hop ").Despite Mr. 3000's public affirmation that he remains a part of the legendary duo, he says there are still no plans for Outkast to tour or even perform one song together live."But that's not even new news," he said of his lack of interest in performing live. All that has been going on for years. ... Big Boi knows I'm in no position to be thinking about hitting the stage. ... I'm just more focused on producing and writing like I been doing and staying in the studio."So what is Dre coming up with in the studio? Could it be material for a traditional studio album from Outkast?"We're holding it under wraps," is all he would say. "We want to keep it on the low so expectations won't be a certain way. But we're still doing music."Dre and Big are trying to decide what the next single from the "Idlewild" soundtrack will be, but they are leaning toward a song called "Hollywood Divorce" which features Snoop Dogg and Lil Wayne. Dre says if they do choose that track, you'll see him along with Big in the video

Mariah Carey Tour Kickoff: The Voice Outshines Costume Changes, Video Clips

Miami show shoots for spectacle, but Carey and her pipes are main attraction.

MIAMI — Opening night of Mariah Carey's Adventures of Mimi: The Voice, the Hits, the Tour could have been subtitled The Videos, the Costumes, the Waiting. But when Carey set aside the spectacle to focus on her music and reach out to funs , she hit her stride — and those high Cs.It could have been first-show jitters, but on Saturday night, the singer seemed preoccupied at the start of the concert — as if she forgot that the reason her fans had gathered (some from as far as Portugal and Peru) was to hear her sing, not to see how many outfits she could squeeze into. Carey's backup singers and dancers carried on while she changed, DJ Clue tried to keep the momentum going, and Spike Lee (via his mini Mimi movies about rumors and gossip the singer is always facing) tried to distract from the fact that for chunks of the two-hour show, Mariah was onscreen, but not onstage.(Click here for photos from Mariah's opening night.)Perhaps her fashion-minded fans didn't mind — after all, Carey did show off a lot of skin, wearing a black bikini with a cape, two different gowns with exposed midriffs, and a metallic red burlesque number that lent itself to lots of straddling poses behind a straight-back chair during "Breakdown" (see "Mariah Turning Into Superhero, James Bond On Upcoming Tour"). But it wasn't just Carey's cutout gowns that had something missing — being offstage for 10 minutes at a stretch meant the set list also got the cutout treatment, reducing several songs to snippets. On a duet with her backup singer and fan favorite Trey Lorenz, she didn't have time to sing the entire "One Sweet Day" with him so they started the song at the bridge. And though Carey claims "I Know What You Want" — her hit with opening act Busta Rhymes — she didn't seem to know that that the crowd wanted was to see them perform the song together. Busta had included the song in his set, exhorting the ladies to sing Carey's part, and teased that he'd be back later. But when it was Carey's turn onstage, she opted to have the rapper "appear" via the music video they shot together in 2003. Jay-Z, Jermaine Dupri and the late Ol' Dirty Bastard also participated in much the same manner during "Heartbreaker," "It's Like That," and "Fantasy," which was more understandable — but Busta?Carey was clued in that her fans wanted to hear a lot of inspirational numbers, so she packed the set with "Make It Happen," "Fly Like a Bird" (which came with a backing choir), and "Hero," which she said wasn't planned, but so many people had told her it had "changed their lives," that she "can't do a show without it." Those are all big numbers, and no one sings big better than Mariah — she hit all the high C notes with ease — but it was when she brought the show down a notch halfway through the set that she seemed happiest.Standing on a platform in the middle of the floor seats, Carey was able to reach out to the fans and they to her. One girl even threw her purse to Carey as an offering (whatever happened to the days of bras and roses?). As if in exchange, Carey tossed her sunglasses out to the sea of grabbing hands. "I'm in the middle of the people," she said, amazed, as if to herself. Though "Don't Forget About Us" and "Always Be My Baby" are meant to be love songs, she sang them as if they were love letters to her fans, sending her dancers away so it would be just her and her adoring public for a moment. "We didn't really rehearse this," she apologized, but having a spontaneous moment was exactly what she needed to get back on track. While all the glitz and glamour of the lights, the dancers, the video screens, the costumes, and the confetti are what we expect from a diva of Carey's stature, her fans actually want something far less extravagant: All they were talking about while filing in and out of the venue were the songs. It sounds simple enough, but Carey doesn't let it be simple — not when she can make holding a note, as she did in the encore of "We Belong Together," a major accomplishment. Clutching herself tight as if she could bottle it up inside somehow before she had to ultimately let go, she found her release, her purpose. "I didn't make it easy," she said, after letting the last strain fall away. And if it were easy, no one would be in awe that despite everything else — first-night glitches, gossip and all — she nailed it.

Marie Claire Editor, Readers Lash Out At Ashlee Simpson

After cover story on body image, they take her to task for alleged nose job.

Ashlee Simpson's got Marie Claire readers all bent out of shape. The magazine received hundreds of letters in protest after the singer was a cover subject for a story on body image. The magazine's new editor agrees with the outrage, and she included a note in an expanded letters section taking the singer to task for what she calls an "obvious" nose job."She was quoting chapter and verse about how crucial it is to love yourself as you are, etc.," Editor in Chief Joanna Coles wrote. "We're dazed and confused — and disappointed — by her choice too!"In the July cover story, Simpson helped a group of teenage girls make a mural that celebrated the female figure. The girls from Los Angeles' Green Dot Public Schools painted messages of empowerment such as "Beautiful Mind," "Confidence Is Sexy" and "Women Rock" on the mural."Everyone is made differently, and that's what makes us beautiful and unique," Simpson told the magazine. "I want girls to look in the mirror and feel confident."Readers were outraged that Simpson gave such lip service to accepting one's body for what it is when her reportedly new face was making the news.In response to the reader outrage, Coles wrote in the September issue, on newsstands August 15, "What can we say? Her nose, her choice. (Although we rather liked her original one: She had that Gisele Bündchen thing going on)."And in response to the editor giving so much space to the subject, Simpson's rep Rob Shuter said, "I'm sorry the new editor is using Ashlee to get publicity for her magazine."Whatever cosmetic changes Simpson might have made to herself, she did say in the Marie Claire story that her beauty image is only skin-deep."Have there been times when I've been insecure? Hell, yeah!" Simpson said. "But have I ever felt unhappy with what I'm actually doing in my life? No."

Shakira, Chili Peppers, Madonna, Panic! Lead List Of Nominees For MTV Video Music Awards

Performers include Justin Timberlake, Beyoncé, T.I., Ludacris and the Killers.

The list of nominees for the 2006 MTV Video Music Awards includes a familiar mix of hip-shakers, funky Californians, ambitious blondes — and one group of tight-trousered gatecrashers.Swivel-hipped Shakira and the rejuvenated Red Hot Chili Peppers lead the field with seven noms each, followed closely by the majestic Madonna and upstart Las Vegas rockers Panic! at the Disco, both with five nods. Christina Aguilera is next with four.Videos from all five artists — Shakira's "Hips Don't Lie," the Chili Peppers' "Dani California," Madonna's "Hung Up," Panic's "I Write Sins Not Tragedies" and Aguilera's "Ain't No Other Man" — will go head-to-head for the coveted Video of the Year Moonman at the 2006 VMAs, which will air live from New York's Radio City Music Hall on August 31. Panic! are also one of the first artists confirmed to perform on the show, joining an all-star cast that also includes Justin Timberlake, Beyoncé, T.I., Ludacris and the Killers. Shakira's "Hips" scored nominations for Best Female Video (where it also faces off against Aguilera and Madonna, as well as Kelly Clarkson's "Because of You" and Nelly Furtado's "Promiscuous"), Best Dance Video, Best Pop Video and the Viewer's Choice Award, plus a pair of technical nods — for Choreography and Art Direction — along with its Video of the Year nom.In addition to their Video of the Year nom, the Chili Peppers' "Dani California" is up for Best Group Video and Best Rock Video (it also landed a host of technical nominations, for Direction, Editing, Cinematography and Art Direction)."I found out we got [seven nominations] when my office paged me this morning," RHCP frontman Anthony Kiedis told MTV News. "And ironically enough, seven is the number my 4-year-old nephew predicted when he first saw the video. You know when you're getting through to the 4-year-old kids you're doing something right. Making a great video still means a lot to us — we look at it as a great opportunity and we put our hearts into it. So these nominations mean a lot to us."VMA vet Madonna is up for Best Female Video, Dance Video, Pop Video and Choreography, while Panic! at the Disco — who less than two years ago weren't even a band — saw their "Sins" clip nominated for Best Rock Video, Best Group Video and Best New Artist (going up against Angels & Airwaves' "The Adventure," Avenged Sevenfold's "Bat Country," Rihanna's "S.O.S.," Chris Brown's "Run It!" and James Blunt's "You're Beautiful"), plus an Art Direction nom ."It was kind of mind-blowing when we heard that the Red Hot Chili Peppers got a few and then Madonna got a few, and we were right there with them," Panic! frontman Brendon Urie said Monday (July 31). "It's crazy to see us up there. It's been a year of firsts for us: We did our first album and we got our first big sales, and our first gold record, and now we got our first five VMA nominations. ... It's awesome to see all the success that's coming."Aguilera's four nominations include nods for Video of the Year and Best Female Video, while a gaggle of artists — including AFI, Chris Brown and Gnarls Barkley — locked up three nominations apiece. Fall Out Boy, Kanye West, Rihanna and the Pussycat Dolls each scored two noms."It feels phenomenal," T.I. — whose "What You Know" clip is nominated for Best Male Video and Best Rap Video — told MTV News. "Lots of hard work and perseverance paying off, and I'm definitely look forward to that big night. It's going to be a monumental evening. I'm excited because it's going to be my first time performing [at the awards], and I'm nominated. So it's been a great year for me, and I'm just looking forward to doing my thing."
